In case you haven’t noticed, I am gluten-free! And many of the taco seasoning packets out on the market are not gluten-free or don’t specifically say they are gluten-free on the packaging (which to me means they are questionable and I generally stay away).
I dug into the ingredients of those handy taco seasoning mix packets and put together a recipe that I’ve tested and used and it’s great. There’s also a cool spicy variant I’ll share.
So here we go!

Gluten Free Taco Seasoning Mix
I've created this recipe for you to make as needed, i.e., the recipe roughly equals one store bought taco seasoning mix packet. I like to make enough at a time to put in a large spice container and have on hand to use over and over adn then when I'm running low, I just make another big batch.
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp chili powder
- 1/2 tbsp gluten-free baking flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp ground cumin
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp crushed red papper flakes
- 1/4 tsp oregano
- 2/3 cup water
Instructions
- Combine dry spices and mix well. It will be about 3 tablespoons of spice mix.
- When making taco meat, brown whatever meat you are using (usually about 1 to 1 1/2 pounds) and drain fat.
- Add 2/3 cup on water to meat and then add gluten-free taco seasoning mix to
- Stir and simmer for about 5 to 10 minutes
Notes
- You can also multiply this spice mix by 4 or more and save what's left in an airtight container and have enough for 3 or 4 batches of taco seasoning.
- Also, you can use chipotle chili powder instead of regular chili powder, but watch out because it's seriously SPICY!
